Sterile, Ready-to-Use Antibiotic for Eukaryotic and Bacterial Selection
Gibco™ Hygromycin B is a water-soluble aminoglycoside antibiotic purified from Streptomyces hydroscopicus and is commonly used for the selection and maintenance of hygromycin-resistant cells. Supplied as a sterile 50 mg/mL liquid solution, it provides convenience and consistency for applications requiring antibiotic pressure in mammalian or insect cell culture systems.
Hygromycin B is effective at inhibiting protein synthesis by interfering with translocation during translation. Resistance is conferred by the hygromycin resistance gene (hyg or hph) from E. coli, making it compatible with dual-selection systems alongside other antibiotics like Geneticin™, Blasticidin S, or Zeocin™.
Key Features and Benefits
-
Convenient Ready-to-Use Format
Supplied as a 50 mg/mL sterile liquid, eliminating the need for reconstitution or sterile filtration. -
Broad Spectrum Activity
Inhibits translation in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, supporting versatile use in transfection and transformation workflows. -
Stable Selection Pressure
Recommended working concentration of 200–500 µg/mL for most applications, ideal for stable cell line generation. -
Dual-Selection Compatible
Acts via a different mechanism than Geneticin™, Blasticidin S, or Zeocin™, making it suitable for multi-antibiotic systems. -
Validated for Cell Culture Use
Suitable for use in mammalian and insect cell culture, ensuring reliability in research applications.
Applications
- Stable transfection and selection of mammalian or insect cells
- Antibiotic selection of cells carrying the hyg/hph resistance gene
- Bacterial and eukaryotic gene expression studies
- Dual-selection experiments with non-overlapping antibiotic resistance genes
- Elimination of non-transfected cells in stable line development
