Fehling’s reagents are used in classical qualitative analysis of reducing sugars, such as glucose, fructose, and lactose. The test is based on the reduction of copper(II) ions (from Fehling’s reagent I) to copper(I) oxide, producing a characteristic red precipitate when reducing sugars are present.
Both reagents are supplied as concentrated solutions and must be mixed in equal volumes immediately before use to create the working Fehling's solution.
Fehling’s Reagent I – Copper(II) Sulphate Solution (Concentrate)

Storage: Ambient temperature
Description: A concentrated aqueous solution of copper(II) sulfate, Fehling’s reagent I serves as the source of Cu²⁺ ions in the Fehling reaction.
Fehling’s Reagent II – Alkaline Tartrate Solution (Concentrate)
Catalog Number: 31966.267
Volume: 500 mL
CAS: 6381-59-5
Main Components: L(+)-potassium sodium tartrate in sodium hydroxide solution
UN Number: 1824
ADR Class: 8, Packing Group II
Hazard Symbol: GHS05 (Corrosive)
Storage: Ambient temperature
Description: A stabilized alkaline solution of potassium sodium tartrate and sodium hydroxide, Fehling’s reagent II provides the necessary alkaline environment and stabilizes the copper ions during the test.
How to Use (Qualitative Test for Reducing Sugars)
- Mix equal volumes of Fehling’s reagent I and II freshly before the test.
- Add the sample to the mixed solution and heat gently.
- A red precipitate of Cu₂O indicates the presence of reducing sugars.
Applications
- Qualitative detection of reducing sugars in food, dairy, and pharmaceutical samples
- Educational chemistry demonstrations (redox reactions, carbohydrate analysis)
- Basic biochemical research involving carbohydrate assays
