Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Ampicillin/Sulbactam Antimicrobial Susceptibility Discs are intended for manual antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. These combination discs help determine the in vitro effectiveness of the beta-lactam antibiotic ampicillin in combination with the beta-lactamase inhibitor sulbactam, which broadens ampicillin's spectrum of activity.
Each cartridge contains 50 discs, pre-loaded with either 20 µg or 30 µg of ampicillin/sulbactam, and housed in a shatterproof, spring-loaded dispenser. Each cartridge is individually sealed with desiccant to maintain optimal moisture levels and ensure long-term disc stability.
These discs are used to detect resistance patterns and offer visual interpretation of test variables such as inoculum level, mutant colonies, and antagonism or synergy between antibiotics.
Key Features
- Combination of ampicillin (antibiotic) and sulbactam (beta-lactamase inhibitor)
- Available in 20 µg and 30 µg concentrations
- Used in manual AST disc diffusion methods (e.g., Kirby-Bauer)
- Cartridge-based dispensing system for ease of use
- Individually desiccant-sealed cartridges for extended shelf life
- Compliant with CLSI, EUCAST, and SFM standards
-
Visual cues assist in identifying:
- Beta-lactamase activity
- Inoculum errors or contamination
- Antibiotic interactions and resistance patterns
Applications
- AST testing of Enterobacteriaceae and Gram-negative bacteria
- Evaluation of combination therapy effectiveness
- Detecting beta-lactam resistance mechanisms
- Support for clinical antibiotic decision-making
- Hospital and clinical microbiology labs, public health labs, and research
Intended Use Statement
For in vitro diagnostic use only.
Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Ampicillin/Sulbactam Antimicrobial Susceptibility Discs are designed for semi-quantitative agar diffusion testing with pure, agar-grown bacterial cultures. These discs aid in identifying microbial susceptibility to the ampicillin/sulbactam combination but are not intended for automated platforms or as companion diagnostics.
