Convenient, pre-filtered chromogenic substrate for β-galactosidase detection and blue/white screening

The Thermo Scientific™ X-Gal Solution is a ready-to-use, pre-filtered formulation of 5-bromo-4-chloro-3-indolyl-β-D-galactopyranoside, a chromogenic substrate for β-galactosidase. Upon hydrolysis by β-galactosidase, X-Gal is cleaved into colorless galactose and 4-chloro-3-bromo-indigo, which forms an intense blue precipitate.

This solution is ideal for blue/white colony screening when used in combination with IPTG to induce lacZ gene expression, enabling clear differentiation between recombinant (white) and non-recombinant (blue) colonies. It is also widely used for detecting β-galactosidase activity in histochemical and immunological assays, as well as for monitoring reporter gene expression in eukaryotic systems.
