For Detection and Isolation of Pseudomonas spp., Including P. aeruginosa
CHROMagar™ Pseudomonas is a selective chromogenic culture medium developed for the detection and isolation of Pseudomonas spp. from water, food, pharmaceutical, and environmental samples. Colonies of Pseudomonas spp. appear as intense blue-green, providing rapid and reliable visual identification—even in mixed cultures.
Designed to replace conventional media such as Cetrimide or King’s A, CHROMagar™ Pseudomonas is particularly useful for monitoring water quality, detecting psychrotrophic spoilage strains in refrigerated foods, and identifying opportunistic pathogens like P. aeruginosa.
🔹 Key Features & Benefits
-
✅ Distinct Colony Coloration:
Organism Colony Appearance Pseudomonas spp. (incl. P. aeruginosa) Blue-green Enterobacteriaceae Mauve to violet or inhibited - ✅ Fast Results: Detectable within 24 hours of incubation.
-
✅ Flexible Testing Formats:
- Compatible with membrane filtration for water testing (e.g., 100 mL samples)
- Supports direct streaking and surface inoculation for food and environmental samples
-
✅ Easy to Use & Interpret:
- One intensified, unique color for Pseudomonas colonies
- Readable under normal lighting—no need for UV fluorescence or special indicators
- ✅ Clean Background: Suppresses interfering flora, improving accuracy in complex sample matrices.
🔹 Intended Use
CHROMagar™ Pseudomonas is intended for:
-
Qualitative detection and enumeration of Pseudomonas spp. from:
- Drinking water and recreational water (pools, spas, fountains)
- Animal-derived foods (milk, cheese, meat, fish, eggs)
- Respiratory samples (e.g., from cystic fibrosis patients)
- Pharmaceuticals and cosmetics
- Surfaces and equipment in cleanroom or production settings
⚠️ Not for clinical diagnostic purposes. Suspect colonies should be confirmed by identification methods (e.g., MALDI-TOF, oxidase test).
🔹 Public Health & Industrial Relevance
- Water Quality: P. aeruginosa is a key indicator organism for disinfection failure in public pools and spas.
- Food Safety: Psychrotrophic Pseudomonas spp. (e.g., P. fragi, P. lundensis, P. taetrolens) are responsible for spoilage of refrigerated foods—but rarely cause illness.
- Healthcare: P. aeruginosa is an opportunistic pathogen, particularly dangerous to immunocompromised individuals and those with cystic fibrosis.
📌 CHROMagar™ Pseudomonas supports early detection and control across public health, food safety, and pharmaceutical hygiene applications.
🔹 Test Procedure
- Sample Types: Water, dairy, meats, respiratory secretions, surface swabs
-
Inoculation Methods:
- Direct surface streaking
- Membrane filtration (place membrane on agar)
- Pour plate (if validated for food matrices)
-
Incubation:
- Temperature: 30–37 °C (depending on protocol)
- Time: 24–48 hours
- Atmosphere: Aerobic
-
Interpretation:
- Pseudomonas spp. = Intense blue-green colonies
- Other bacteria = Mauve, violet, or inhibited
