High-Nutrition Medium for Aerobic and Anaerobic Bacteria

SCHAEDLER AGAR BASE is a non-selective, enriched basal medium formulated for the isolation and cultivation of fastidious aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms, including lactobacilli, streptococci, clostridia, and Bacteroides. When supplemented with blood and vitamins, it supports the growth of highly demanding intestinal organisms and is especially useful for the recovery of anaerobic flora from fecal, food, and environmental samples.

Typical Formula (per liter)

Preparation Instructions

1. Suspend 38.9 g of powder in 1 L distilled/deionized water.
2. Heat to dissolve completely; boil briefly if necessary.
3. Autoclave at 121 °C for 15 minutes.
4. Cool to 45–50 °C and aseptically add:
   • 5% defibrinated sheep blood (Cat. No. 83296)
   • 1 mL Vitamin K 1% supplement (Cat. No. 80053)
   • Optional: 2 vials of Schaedler supplement (Kanamycin + Vancomycin, Cat. No. 81054)
5. Mix well and pour into sterile Petri dishes.

• Recovery of fastidious anaerobes suppressed by common flora
• Use in microbiota diversity studies, pharmaceutical testing, and food microbiology
• Base for preparation of Schaedler KKV Agar (with kanamycin/vancomycin)
