Liofilchem® Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB)

Liofilchem® Potato Dextrose Broth (PDB) is a dehydrated culture medium formulated for the cultivation of yeasts and moulds from food and dairy products. It provides a nutrient-rich environment that supports the growth of a wide range of fungi, making it suitable for food microbiology testing and quality control laboratories.

 Potato Dextrose Broth is specifically intended for cultivating yeasts and moulds and is widely referenced in food microbiology standards.

Typical Formula (g/L)

• Potatoes, infusion from: 200.0
• Glucose: 20.0
• Final pH: 5.1 ± 0.2 at 25°C

The acidic pH favors fungal growth while limiting bacterial contamination.

Preparation

1. Suspend 27.0 g of powder in 1 liter of distilled or deionized water.
2. Heat to boiling until completely dissolved.
3. Dispense into final containers.
4. Sterilize by autoclaving at 121°C for 15 minutes.

Principle

Potato infusion provides essential nutrients and growth factors that enhance fungal development. Glucose acts as a readily available carbon and energy source. The slightly acidic pH (approximately 5.1) creates an optimal environment for yeast and mould growth while suppressing many bacterial species.

Growth is indicated by turbidity after incubation.
