Middlebrook 7H11 + Drug is a solid, agar-based medium designed for susceptibility testing of Mycobacterium spp., particularly Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The medium contains specific anti-tuberculous drugs and is ideal for assessing drug resistance directly from clinical specimens. Compared to egg-based media like Lowenstein formulations, Middlebrook 7H11 demonstrates enhanced performance due to reduced drug inactivation.
Features and Benefits
- Agar-Based Medium:
- Promotes superior drug susceptibility testing compared to coagulated egg-based media.
- Enhanced viability and growth of M. tuberculosis, especially for fastidious strains.
- Comprehensive Composition:
- Nutrients: Pancreatic digest of casein, glutamic acid, and glucose provide nitrogen, vitamins, and energy.
- Selective Agents: Malachite green inhibits contaminants while protecting pH.
- Stabilizers: Catalase and albumin safeguard bacilli from toxic agents.
- Growth Enhancers: Oleic acid supports fatty acid metabolism.
- Specific Drug Inclusion:
- Available with various anti-tuberculous drugs at precise concentrations to assess resistance.
- Improved Diagnostic Accuracy:
- Enables clear interpretation of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC).
- Compliance with Standards:
- Recommended by CLSI and CDC for tuberculosis susceptibility testing.
