The Invitrogen™ Galactose Colorimetric Detection Kit is a complete, ready-to-use assay for the quantitative measurement of galactose in serum, plasma, buffers, and tissue culture media. Utilizing a robust colorimetric format with detection at 560 nm, the kit provides high sensitivity (0.493 mg/dL) and a broad standard curve range (0.78–25 mg/dL) for accurate galactose quantification.

Assay Principle

The assay measures galactose based on galactose oxidase-mediated oxidation:

  1. Galactose oxidase reacts with D-(+)-galactose to generate hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂).
  2. In the presence of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), H₂O₂ reacts with a proprietary substrate to produce a pink-colored product.
  3. The absorbance is read at 560 nm using a microplate reader, with color intensity proportional to galactose concentration.

Key Features

  • High Sensitivity – Detects as low as 0.493 mg/dL galactose.
  • Broad Quantification Range – 0.78–25 mg/dL standard curve.
  • Ready-to-Use Kit – Includes plates, standards, buffers, and all required reagents.
  • Species Independent – Works across multiple biological sources.
  • Simple Workflow – Room temperature 30-minute incubation with direct readout.

Applications

  • Metabolic Studies – Assess galactose metabolism in research models.
  • Food & Nutrition Research – Measure galactose in dairy, fruit, and vegetable samples (research use only).
  • Enzyme Activity Studies – Monitor galactose oxidase-dependent reactions.
  • Cell Culture Monitoring – Evaluate sugar metabolism in tissue culture systems.
  • Biochemical Pathway Analysis – Study the Leloir pathway and related disorders.
