Quantitative colorimetric measurement of lipid peroxidation biomarkers in biological samples
The Invitrogen™ Thiobarbituric Acid Reactants (TBARS) Colorimetric Assay Kit provides a sensitive, accurate, and reproducible method for the quantitative determination of lipid peroxidation products, particularly malondialdehyde (MDA), in serum, plasma, animal tissues, cultured cells, and other biological samples.
TBARS are formed when polyunsaturated fatty acids in cellular membranes are attacked by oxygen free radicals, leading to oxidative degradation of lipids. Measuring TBARS levels is widely used as an oxidative stress biomarker, providing an indication of cell membrane damage and oxidative injury in both research and clinical studies.
In this assay, TBARS react with thiobarbituric acid (TBA) under acidic, high-temperature conditions to form a pink chromogen, the intensity of which (measured at 530–540 nm) is directly proportional to TBARS concentration in the sample.
Key Features
- High Sensitivity – Detects as low as 0.85 μmol/L
- Wide Measurement Range – 2.6–100 μmol/L
- Simple Workflow – ~80 minutes total assay time with 60-minute incubation
- Broad Sample Compatibility – Works with plasma, serum, and tissue homogenates
- Reliable Performance – Low intra-assay CV (4.3%) and inter-assay CV (7.1%)
- Direct Colorimetric Readout – Absorbance at 530–540 nm
-
A TBARS (Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances) calculator, a simple tool that converts your plate-reader absorbance values (at 530–540 nm) into TBARS concentration (typically as MDA equivalents, μmol/L) using your standard curve is available
Applications
- Oxidative Stress Research – Quantify lipid peroxidation in disease models
- Toxicology Studies – Assess oxidative damage induced by chemicals or drugs
- Aging & Degenerative Disease Research – Study oxidative membrane injury mechanisms
- Nutritional Science – Evaluate antioxidant interventions on lipid peroxidation levels
- Biomedical Research – Investigate oxidative injury in metabolic and inflammatory disorders
