Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ EC Broth with MUG is a selective enrichment medium designed for the detection and differentiation of Escherichia coli and fecal coliforms in food, environmental, and dairy samples. The addition of MUG (4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide) enables the detection of β-glucuronidase (GUD) activity, which is specific to E. coli, providing a fluorescent end-product for rapid and reliable identification.
Key Features
1. Selectivity
- Contains Bile Salts No. 3 to inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria, such as bacilli and fecal streptococci, ensuring selectivity for Escherichia coli.
2. MUG Fluorescence Detection
- MUG is cleaved by β-glucuronidase, an enzyme produced by E. coli, resulting in a fluorescent end-product under UV light, making it easy to confirm the presence of E. coli.
3. Versatile Applications
- Recommended for:
- Enumeration of presumptive E. coli in milk and dairy products.
- Confirmation of E. coli in food and environmental samples.
- Detection of E. coli from shellfish and meat, as per FDA/BAM guidelines.
4. Reliable Results
- Produces dependable results within 24–48 hours, allowing rapid detection and confirmation of fecal contamination.
5. Regulatory Compliance
- Compliant with FDA/BAM standards, ensuring suitability for regulatory testing.
Applications
- Food Safety Testing:
- Detect and differentiate Escherichia coli in raw and processed foods.
- Water Quality Monitoring:
- Identify E. coli contamination in drinking water and recreational water sources.
- Dairy Industry:
- Confirm the presence of presumptive E. coli in milk and milk products.
- Environmental Testing:
- Monitor fecal contamination in wastewater and sewage.
- Shellfish and Meat Testing:
- Compliant with FDA/BAM methods for E. coli confirmation in shellfish and meat samples.
