Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Hynes Desoxycholate Citrate Agar (Hynes Modification) is a selective and differential medium specifically designed for the isolation and differentiation of Salmonella and Shigella species from clinical and fecal samples. Its improved formulation enhances the selectivity and colony morphology, simplifying the detection and identification of target pathogens.
Key Features
1. Enhanced Selectivity
- Suppresses the growth of coliforms and Proteus species, improving the isolation of Salmonella and Shigella.
2. Easy Differentiation
- Lactose fermenting organisms: Produce pink colonies, often surrounded by a zone of precipitated desoxycholic acid.
- Non-lactose fermenting organisms (e.g., Salmonella, Shigella): Produce colorless colonies surrounded by a clear orange-yellow zone due to an alkaline reaction.
3. Improved Colony Morphology
- Larger and more distinct colonies of Shigella species, facilitating easier selection for further biochemical and serological testing.
4. Based on Proven Formula
- An improved version of the Hynes1 modification of Leifson’s2 medium, combining effective differentiation and high selectivity.
5. Versatile Applications
- Suitable for clinical, food, and environmental microbiology to isolate enteric pathogens.
Applications
- Clinical Microbiology:
- Identify Salmonella and Shigella species from fecal and other clinical samples.
- Food and Water Testing:
- Screen for contamination in processed foods, raw ingredients, and water.
- Public Health:
- Support epidemiological investigations of foodborne illness outbreaks.
- Veterinary Diagnostics:
- Detect enteric pathogens in livestock and animal feed samples.
- Environmental Monitoring:
- Analyze sewage, wastewater, and other environmental samples for fecal contamination.
