The Liofilchem™ Fermentation Broth Base is a high-quality liquid culture medium designed for the differentiation of bacteria based on carbohydrate fermentation. Formulated according to ISO 11290, this medium is particularly recommended for the confirmation of Listeria monocytogenes in food and microbiological testing workflows.
Used in combination with specific carbohydrates (e.g., rhamnose), the medium enables laboratories to assess acid and gas production, supporting reliable identification of bacterial species. The inclusion of bromocresol purple as a pH indicator allows clear visual interpretation of fermentation reactions, making it suitable for routine diagnostic, food safety, and research applications.
Key Features
- Formulated according to ISO 11290 standard for Listeria detection
- Supports carbohydrate fermentation testing for bacterial differentiation
- Ideal for confirmation of Listeria monocytogenes
- Contains bromocresol purple indicator for clear color change (purple → yellow)
- Suitable for acid and gas detection (with Durham tubes)
- High-quality dehydrated medium with 4-year shelf life
- Compatible with food, clinical, and environmental microbiology applications
- Reliable performance from Liofilchem™, a trusted microbiology brand
Applications
- Confirmation of Listeria monocytogenes in food testing
- Carbohydrate utilization and fermentation studies
- Differentiation of bacterial species in pure cultures
- Food microbiology and safety testing
- Clinical microbiology diagnostics
- Environmental microbiological analysis
- Teaching and research laboratories
Principle of the Method
The medium supports bacterial growth and enables detection of carbohydrate fermentation:
- Proteose peptone and meat extract provide essential nutrients for microbial growth
- Sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance
- Bromocresol purple acts as a pH indicator
Interpretation:
-
Positive fermentation (acid production):
Medium changes from purple to yellow -
Gas production:
Observed in Durham tubes -
Negative reaction:
Medium remains purple
This allows clear differentiation of microorganisms based on metabolic activity.
