Validated for Microbiology, Pharmaceutical Research, and Fungal Susceptibility Testing
Thermo Scientific™ Nystatin (≥85%, Powder) is a broad-spectrum polyene macrolide antifungal agent widely used in microbiology, pharmaceutical research, and antifungal susceptibility testing. It is effective against yeasts, fungi, and molds, including Candida spp. and Aspergillus spp., by binding to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, increasing permeability, and leading to cell death.
With high activity (≥4400 IU/mg) and purity (≥85%), this yellow to light brown powder is essential for antifungal drug development, cell culture contamination prevention, and mycology research.
Key Features & Benefits

Mechanism of Action & Resistance
Mode of Action:
- Nystatin binds to ergosterol in fungal cell membranes, creating ion-permeable channels that lead to loss of essential cellular components and fungal cell death.
- Used for fungal inhibition in microbiology, pharmaceutical formulations, and antifungal drug development.
Mode of Resistance:
- Altered ergosterol biosynthesis reduces Nystatin binding affinity, leading to resistance.
- Some fungal species overexpress efflux pumps, decreasing intracellular Nystatin concentration.
Antimicrobial Spectrum:
✔ Yeasts (Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Saccharomyces cerevisiae)
✔ Fungal Pathogens (Aspergillus spp., Cryptococcus spp.)
✔ Molds & Dermatophytes
Applications
🔬 Microbiology & Fungal Pathogen Research – Investigates fungal growth inhibition mechanisms
🦠 Antifungal Susceptibility Testing (AST) – Evaluates fungal resistance to polyene antibiotics
⚗️ Pharmaceutical Drug Development – Supports antifungal drug screening & formulation studies
🧪 Mycology & Biopharmaceutical Research – Used for fungal strain isolation & characterization
🏥 Clinical Microbiology & Diagnostic Testing – Detects fungal contamination in cell cultures
Preparation & Storage Guidelines
1️⃣ Preparation of Stock Solution
- Dissolve in methanol, ethanol, or DMSO at recommended working concentrations.
- Insoluble in water – prepare as suspension or organic solvent-based stock.
- Filter sterilization is not recommended; autoclaving degrades activity.
2️⃣ Recommended Working Concentrations
- Antifungal Susceptibility Testing: Variable (refer to CLSI/EUCAST guidelines).
- Cell Culture Contamination Prevention: 50 mg/L.
3️⃣ Storage Conditions
- Store at -20°C for long-term stability.
- Protect from light, moisture, and oxygen exposure.
- Aqueous suspensions degrade rapidly; prepare fresh when needed.
