Highly Nutritive, Non-Selective Culture Medium for the Isolation of Fastidious Organisms
Liofilchem® Chocolate Agar is a ready-to-use, enriched non-selective medium designed for the isolation and cultivation of fastidious microorganisms—particularly Neisseria spp. and Haemophilus spp.—from clinical specimens and other sanitary-relevant materials. The medium incorporates defibrinated horse blood and Vitalex Growth Supplement to provide essential growth factors such as hemin (X factor) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD or V factor), which are critical for the recovery of demanding bacterial species.
Recommended for clinical microbiology laboratories, this medium supports the growth of organisms requiring complex nutritional requirements and is frequently used in diagnostic testing, research, and public health investigations.
Key Features & Benefits
-
Highly Enriched Formula
- Contains enzymatic digests, corn starch, phosphates, and horse blood
- Supplemented with Vitalex Growth Supplement for enhanced recovery of Haemophilus and Neisseria
-
Supports Growth of Fastidious Bacteria
- Ideal for isolating Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae
-
Non-Selective & Nutrient-Rich
- Promotes general growth without inhibiting normal flora
- Allows for observation of colony morphology without the use of selective inhibitors
-
CO₂ Incubation Compatible
- Optimized for use in 5–10% CO₂ enriched aerobic atmospheres
-
Multiple Formats Available
- Plates, slant tubes, and bottles for flexibility in sample processing and culture maintenance
-
Ready-to-Use Convenience
- Reduces preparation time and risk of contamination in routine microbiology workflows
Applications
- Isolation of Neisseria and Haemophilus from genital, throat, and nasopharyngeal swabs
- Cultivation of Streptococcus pneumoniae and other fastidious respiratory pathogens
- Bacterial recovery from CSF, blood, sputum, and other clinical materials
- General-purpose growth of nutritionally demanding bacteria for identification and susceptibility testing
