The Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Campylobacter Karmali Agar Base (Dehydrated) is a selective medium designed for the isolation of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli from clinical specimens. Based on the formulation by Karmali et al., this medium is used with Modified Karmali Selective Supplement (SR0205) or Campylobacter Selective Supplement (Karmali) (SR0167). The formulation provides robust selectivity and visibility, making it ideal for identifying Campylobacter spp. in diagnostic microbiology workflows.
Key Features
- Selective Formulation:
- Includes vancomycin and amphotericin B to suppress Gram-positive organisms and fungi, enhancing the recovery of Campylobacter spp.
- Blood-Free Alternative:
- Incorporates sodium pyruvate in the supplement, eliminating the need for blood in the medium.
- Clear Colony Morphology:
- Campylobacter jejuni produces grey, moist, flat spreading colonies after 42-hour incubation at 42°C, simplifying identification.
- Wide Applicability:
- Suitable for testing clinical, food, and environmental samples.
- Validated and Reliable:
- Recommended for Campylobacter isolation by microbiology standards.
Applications
1. Clinical Microbiology
- Isolation and identification of Campylobacter spp. from human fecal samples to diagnose enteritis and other gastrointestinal illnesses.
2. Food Microbiology
- Detection of Campylobacter in raw and processed foods, including:
- Meat and poultry
- Dairy products
- Seafood
3. Environmental Microbiology
- Monitoring Campylobacter contamination in water, soil, and food production environments.
