Liofilchem® Carbenicillin Discs (100 µg) are ready-to-use, high-quality antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) discs designed for use in the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar. Each disc is impregnated with 100 µg of Carbenicillin, a broad-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the carboxypenicillin group. These discs are manufactured under strict quality control to comply with ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 standards.
Key Features
- High precision content: Each disc contains exactly 100 µg of Carbenicillin.
- Validated performance: Compliant with CLSI and EUCAST standards for susceptibility testing.
- Sterile and ready to use: Individually packaged or in cartridges to maintain sterility and ease of handling.
- Long shelf-life: Stable under recommended storage conditions.
- Color-coded labels: For easy identification of antibiotic type and potency.
Applications and Use Cases
1. Clinical Microbiology
Used in hospital and diagnostic labs to:
- Determine the susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus spp., and Escherichia coli strains.
- Guide the selection of effective antibiotic treatment for patients with urinary tract infections (UTIs), septicemia, and respiratory tract infections.
2. Pharmaceutical Quality Control
- Evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of Carbenicillin formulations.
- Support batch release testing in antibiotic production.
3. Research and Development
- Study resistance patterns and mechanisms in gram-negative bacteria.
- Screen environmental and clinical isolates for emerging resistance trends.
- Investigate synergistic effects in combination therapy studies.
Use Instructions
- Prepare Mueller-Hinton agar plates.
- Inoculate plates with a standardized bacterial suspension (e.g., 0.5 McFarland).
- Apply the Carbenicillin disc (100 µg) using sterile forceps or an automatic disc dispenser.
- Incubate plates at 35 ± 2 °C for 16–18 hours.
- Measure the diameter of the zone of inhibition in mm.
- Interpret results according to CLSI or EUCAST guidelines.
Storage and Shelf Life
- Storage temperature: 2–8°C
- Shelf life: Typically 2–3 years from manufacturing date when unopened and stored appropriately.
