The Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Optochin Disc is a reliable, ready-to-use diagnostic tool designed for the differentiation of Streptococcus pneumoniae from other alpha-hemolytic streptococci. Each 6 mm paper disc is pre-impregnated with 5 µg of optochin (ethylhydrocuprein hydrochloride) and is intended for use in routine microbial identification workflows.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is characteristically sensitive to optochin, and when cultured, produces a distinct zone of inhibition around the disc. Other viridans group streptococci, by contrast, are resistant and grow up to or near the edge of the disc. This makes the optochin disc a convenient alternative to the bile-solubility test in confirming presumptive pneumococcal colonies on blood agar.
