Binding Specificity

Con A is a tetrameric lectin extracted from Canavalia ensiformis (jack bean). It binds to:

  • α-D-mannopyranosyl
  • α-D-glucopyranosyl
  • Other sterically related carbohydrate structures

Binding requires the presence of hydroxyl groups at C-3, C-4, and C-5 of the sugar ring.
