Selective supplement for isolation and enumeration of Legionella spp. (ISO 11731 compliant)

The Liofilchem® Legionella MWY Supplement (Ref. 81019) is a lyophilized selective additive used in combination with Legionella Growth Supplement (Ref. 80056) and Legionella BCYE Agar Base (Refs. 610049, 620049). Together, these components produce MWY Agar, a selective medium for the detection and enumeration of Legionella species from clinical and environmental samples, in accordance with ISO 11731:2017.

MWY Agar incorporates selective agents and pH indicators that inhibit contaminating microflora and enhance presumptive identification of Legionella colonies.

• Ammonium-free Glycine: 0.3 g / 3.0 g
• Polymyxin B sulfate: 5,000 IU / 50,000 IU
• Vancomycin hydrochloride: 0.0001 g / 0.001 g
• Anisomycin: 0.008 g / 0.08 g
• Bromothymol Blue: 0.001 g / 0.01 g
• Bromocresol Purple: 0.001 g / 0.01 g

Preparation Instructions

1. Reconstitute the contents of one vial with 2 mL sterile distilled water.
2. Add to 90 mL autoclaved, cooled Legionella BCYE Agar Base (45–50 °C).
3. Add 10 mL of reconstituted Legionella Growth Supplement (Ref. 80056) to complete the medium.
4. Mix thoroughly and dispense into Petri dishes.

Quality Control

• Legionella pneumophila WDCM 00107 → Good growth.
• Enterococcus faecalis WDCM 00009 → Totally inhibited.
• Escherichia coli WDCM 00012 → Totally or partially inhibited.
