Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Modified Semi-Solid Rappaport-Vassiliadis (MSRV) Medium Base is a selective and differential medium designed for the isolation of motile Salmonella species from food and environmental samples. The medium enhances motility-based enrichment, allowing Salmonella to migrate through the medium ahead of competing microorganisms and form distinct halos of growth.
Key Features
1. Selective Medium for Salmonella
- Inhibits Gram-positive organisms with:
- Novobiocin
- Low pH
- High magnesium chloride concentration
- Malachite green
2. Motility-Based Isolation
- Utilizes the motility of Salmonella to migrate through the medium ahead of non-Salmonella competitors, forming opaque halos of growth, enabling sensitive and specific isolation.
3. Enhanced Sensitivity
- Designed to detect more Salmonella-positive samples compared to traditional enrichment procedures, as validated by multiple studies.
4. Versatile Applications
- Suitable for:
- Food testing
- Environmental monitoring (e.g., dust in animal production facilities)
Applications
- Food Microbiology:
- Isolate motile Salmonella from contaminated food products.
- Environmental Monitoring:
- Detect Salmonella in animal production environments (dust, feed, etc.).
- Public Health Surveillance:
- Enhance sensitivity in outbreak investigations.
- Veterinary Microbiology:
- Screen for Salmonella in livestock and animal production facilities.

Advantages
- Enhanced Detection:
- Detects more Salmonella-positive samples than traditional methods.
- Selective and Sensitive:
- Efficiently suppresses non-target organisms while enhancing Salmonella motility.
- Ease of Use:
- Simple preparation and easy-to-interpret results with distinct growth halos.
- Wide Applicability:
- Suitable for both food and environmental microbiology.
