The Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Baird-Parker Agar Base (Dehydrated) is a highly selective and sensitive medium for the isolation, enumeration, and presumptive identification of Staphylococcus aureus, including coagulase-positive strains, in food and environmental samples. With a carefully balanced formulation, it suppresses non-target bacteria while promoting the recovery and growth of damaged staphylococci, adhering to multiple international food safety standards.
This medium incorporates glycine, lithium, and tellurite for selective inhibition of competing bacteria. Sodium pyruvate and egg yolk emulsion enhance recovery and differentiation, with diagnostic features such as grey-black shiny colonies surrounded by clear zones.
Key Features
- Selective and Differential:
- Suppresses growth of competing bacteria with glycine, lithium, and tellurite.
- Differentiates Staphylococcus aureus through characteristic colony morphology.
- High Sensitivity:
- Enables recovery of damaged Staphylococcus aureus cells for accurate results.
- Diagnostic Clarity:
- Staphylococcus aureus colonies form grey-black shiny colonies with clear zones due to proteolytic action.
- Compliance with Standards:
- Complies with international standards including AFNOR, AOAC, BSI, EP, IDF, ISO, NMKL, and USDA.
- Versatile Applications:
- Suitable for food safety, clinical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring.
Applications
1. Food Microbiology
- Detection and enumeration of coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus in food products such as meat, dairy, and processed foods.
- Quality control and food safety compliance for manufacturing and processing industries.
2. Clinical and Environmental Microbiology
- Isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from clinical specimens, environmental swabs, and contaminated surfaces.

Diagnostic Features
Characteristic | Observation |
---|---|
Colony Morphology | Grey-black shiny colonies with clear zones due to proteolytic action. |
Clear Zones | Surround colonies after 48 hours, indicative of coagulase activity. |
Opaque Halos | Formed by most strains with extended incubation. |
Egg Yolk Reaction | Differentiates Staphylococcus aureus from other staphylococci. |
Advantages
