Babesia microti ATCC 30221™ (strain Gray) is a parasitic protozoan reference strain used extensively in infectious disease and vector-borne disease research. Originally isolated from a human case of piroplasm infection in Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, this strain serves as a well-established model organism for tick-borne parasitic infections.

This organism is supplied in a frozen format and is maintained through in vivo cultivation in hamster models, making it particularly valuable for studies involving host–parasite interactions, parasitemia dynamics, and therapeutic development. As a representative agent of babesiosis, B. microti is widely used in parasitology, hematology, and zoonotic disease research.

    Key Features

    • Authentic Babesia microti strain Gray (ATCC 30221™)

    Handling & Storage Overview

This strain is supplied as a frozen ampoule and must be handled under strict cold-chain conditions. Upon receipt, the material should be immediately transferred to liquid nitrogen storage or maintained at -80°C for short-term holding (≤1 week).

For culture initiation, the ampoule is rapidly thawed at approximately 35°C, and the contents are aseptically inoculated into an appropriate hamster host following established in vivo propagation protocols. Routine monitoring of parasitemia levels using stained blood films is required to track infection progression and determine optimal passage timing.
