Gibco™ Minimum Essential Medium (MEM) is one of the most widely used classical media for mammalian cell culture. Developed from the original formulation created by Harry Eagle, MEM supports the robust growth of many common suspension and adherent cell lines and remains a foundational medium in research laboratories worldwide.
This formulation contains Hanks’ Balanced Salts (HBSS), enabling its use in environments without CO₂ buffering, such as open vessels, transport conditions, or workflows outside CO₂ incubators. It includes L-glutamine and phenol red, but does not contain HEPES or sodium pyruvate.
Suitable for a wide range of mammalian cells—including HeLa, BHK-21, 293, HEP-2, HT-1080, MCF-7, fibroblasts, and primary rat astrocytes—this medium is manufactured under ISO 13485 cGMP-compliant processes to ensure high quality, consistency, and reliability for research and further manufacturing applications.
