Liofilchem® Campylobacter Preston Supplement, 10 x 10 mL

Liofilchem® Campylobacter Preston Supplement is a selective antibiotic supplement formulated to enhance the recovery and isolation of Campylobacter species from human, animal, and environmental samples.

Based on the formulation by Bolton and Robertson, this supplement improves the selectivity and performance of Campylobacter Agar Base (ref. 611007 / 621007) by suppressing competing microorganisms while promoting the growth of Campylobacter jejuni, C. coli, and related species.

It contains a balanced combination of Polymyxin B, Trimethoprim, Rifampicin, and Cycloheximide, providing effective inhibition of Gram-positive, Gram-negative, and fungal contaminants.

Composition

Principle of the Method

Campylobacter spp. are microaerophilic organisms that require specialized conditions for growth and are easily overgrown by other flora.

The Campylobacter Preston Supplement creates a selective environment by inhibiting most non-target bacteria and fungi while allowing the recovery of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli.

• Polymyxin B and Rifampicin suppress Gram-negative bacteria.
• Trimethoprim interferes with DNA synthesis in Gram-positive and Gram-negative contaminants.
• Cycloheximide inhibits fungal growth.

This formulation enables effective detection and isolation of Campylobacter from mixed or contaminated samples.

Preparation and Use

1. Reconstitute one vial with 2 mL of a 1:1 sterile distilled water/acetone solution.
2. Shake gently until fully dissolved (avoid foaming).
3. Add the entire content (2 mL) aseptically to 500 mL of autoclaved Campylobacter Agar Base cooled to 45–50 °C, supplemented with:
   • 5% lysed horse blood, and
   • 1 vial of Campylobacter Growth Supplement (ref. 81050).
4. Mix gently and pour into sterile Petri dishes.

Quality Control

Appearance: orange freeze-dried product

Incubation conditions: 48 h at 42 °C in a microaerophilic atmosphere

Storage and Stability

• Store at 2–8 °C in the original sealed packaging.
• Protect from light and moisture.
• Shelf life: Up to the expiry date indicated on the label (typically 4 years).
• Discard if deterioration, caking, or contamination is evident.
