Liofilchem® Campylobacter Growth Supplement is a freeze-dried additive designed to enhance the growth and recovery of Campylobacter spp., including C. jejuni and C. coli, on culture media such as Campylobacter Agar Base (ref. 611007 / 621007).
The supplement contains sodium pyruvate, sodium metabisulphite, and ferrous sulphate, which neutralize toxic oxygen derivatives (superoxide anions, peroxides) that inhibit Campylobacter growth in standard culture conditions. By improving aerotolerance and detoxifying reactive oxygen species, this supplement ensures rapid and efficient isolation of Campylobacter species from clinical, food, and environmental samples.
Key Features
- Enhances growth and recovery of Campylobacter spp. under microaerophilic conditions.
- Neutralizes toxic oxygen species, improving aerotolerance.
- Compatible with Campylobacter Agar Base, Columbia Agar, or Blood Agar with selective supplements.
- Freeze-dried and easy to reconstitute, ensuring batch-to-batch consistency.
- Each vial sufficient for 500 mL of medium.
- Validated for diagnostic and food microbiology laboratories.
Composition
| Component | Per Bottle | Per Litre of Medium | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sodium Pyruvate | 125 mg | 250 mg | Neutralizes peroxides and provides energy source |
| Sodium Metabisulphite | 125 mg | 250 mg | Reduces toxic oxygen derivatives |
| Ferrous Sulphate Heptahydrate | 125 mg | 250 mg | Detoxifies reactive oxygen radicals |
Principle of the Method
Campylobacter species are microaerophilic bacteria requiring reduced oxygen tension (~6%) for optimal growth.
Toxic oxygen radicals often inhibit their development in standard aerobic conditions.
The addition of ferrous sulphate, sodium metabisulphite, and sodium pyruvate binds and inactivates these reactive species, allowing Campylobacter jejuni/coli to grow efficiently on selective or enriched media.
This growth supplement enhances recovery, particularly when combined with selective antibiotics and blood enrichment, for rapid detection and identification.
Preparation and Use
- Aseptically reconstitute one vial with 5 mL of sterile distilled water.
- Shake gently until completely dissolved (avoid foaming).
- Add the entire 5 mL to 500 mL of autoclaved Campylobacter Agar Base (45–50 °C).
- If required, add 5–10% lysed horse or ram blood and the appropriate selective supplement for Campylobacter isolation.
- Mix carefully and pour into Petri dishes under aseptic conditions.
Quality Control
| Test Organism | ATCC No. | Expected Result |
