Liofilchem® Neomycin N Antimicrobial Susceptibility Discs, available in 10 µg and 30 µg formats, are high-quality paper discs used for in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) of bacterial isolates. These discs are impregnated with a precise quantity of Neomycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity, particularly effective against many Gram-negative and some Gram-positive bacteria. Designed for use with the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method, these discs allow clinical laboratories to determine bacterial sensitivity to neomycin and guide effective antibiotic therapy.

Manufactured under strict ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 quality standards, these discs are sterile, consistent, and validated for clinical diagnostic applications in microbiology laboratories.

Key Features

  • Two potency options:
    • 10 µg discs: Typically used for selective susceptibility testing and veterinary microbiology.
    • 30 µg discs: Recommended for routine susceptibility testing in clinical isolates.
  • Broad antimicrobial spectrum:
Effective against a wide range of Gram-negative bacilli (e.g., E. coli, Klebsiella spp., Proteus spp.) and select Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus.
  • CLSI and EUCAST compliant:
Suitable for use with standardized zone interpretation guidelines for antimicrobial susceptibility testing.
  • Sterile and stable:
Each disc is individually prepared and stored with desiccant in cartridges or canisters to ensure long-term potency and reliability.
  • Color-coded and labeled:
For easy visual identification and efficient lab workflow.

Applications and Use Cases

1. Clinical Microbiology

  • Detect susceptibility of E. coli, Enterobacter spp., Staphylococcus spp., and Pseudomonas aeruginosa to neomycin.
  • Assess neomycin resistance in mixed flora from skin, wound, and GI specimens.

2. Veterinary Diagnostics

  • Used in susceptibility testing of enteric and skin pathogens in livestock and companion animals.

3. Pharmaceutical and Research

  • Evaluate neomycin effectiveness in developing formulations or comparing aminoglycoside classes.

4. Topical Therapy Suitability

  • Common in evaluating neomycin as part of triple-antibiotic ointments or other topical treatments.

Use Instructions

  1. Prepare media: Use Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA) as the standard base medium.
  2. Inoculum standardization: Prepare a bacterial suspension adjusted to 0.5 McFarland standard.
  3. Inoculation: Evenly swab the agar surface with the bacterial suspension.
  4. Disc placement: Place 10 µg or 30 µg Neomycin disc onto the surface using sterile forceps or a disc dispenser.
  5. Incubation:
    • 35 ± 2 °C for 16–18 hours in aerobic conditions.
  6. Interpretation:
    • Measure the diameter of the inhibition zone in millimeters.
    • Compare results to CLSI or EUCAST standards for Neomycin (if available); otherwise, use internal lab reference.
