Liofilchem® Ofloxacin OFX Antimicrobial Susceptibility Discs (5 µg) are high-performance, ready-to-use paper discs for in vitro determination of bacterial susceptibility to ofloxacin using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method. Each disc is impregnated with 5 micrograms of ofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic effective against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.
These discs are manufactured under ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 standards, ensuring sterility, consistency, and traceability for use in clinical, pharmaceutical, veterinary, and research microbiology laboratories.
Key Features
- Accurate potency: Contains precisely 5 µg of ofloxacin per disc for standardized antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST).
- Broad-spectrum activity: Effective against Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Haemophilus influenzae.
- CLSI/EUCAST compliant: Suitable for susceptibility interpretation using international reference standards.
- Stable and sterile: Supplied in desiccated, sealed cartridges or canisters to maintain potency and prevent degradation.
- Color-coded labeling: Enhances lab workflow and traceability during high-volume susceptibility testing.
Applications and Use Cases
1. Clinical Microbiology
- Susceptibility testing of pathogens involved in urinary tract infections (UTIs), respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and gastrointestinal infections.
- Detection of fluoroquinolone resistance in Gram-negative bacilli and Gram-positive cocci.
2. Veterinary Microbiology
- AST for E. coli, Pasteurella, and Staphylococcus species in livestock and companion animals.
3. Public Health Surveillance
- Resistance monitoring for foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella and Shigella in environmental and clinical settings.
4. Pharmaceutical and Research Laboratories
- Evaluation of new fluoroquinolone formulations.
- MIC correlation studies with fluoroquinolones for pharmacodynamic analysis.
Use Instructions
- Medium: Mueller-Hinton Agar (MHA) is recommended.
- Inoculum preparation: Adjust the bacterial suspension to 0.5 McFarland turbidity standard.
- Inoculation: Spread the inoculum uniformly over the agar surface using a sterile swab.
- Disc placement: Place one 5 µg Ofloxacin disc on the agar using sterile forceps or a disc dispenser.
- Incubation: 35 ± 2 °C for 16–18 hours under aerobic conditions.
- Result interpretation: Measure the diameter of the inhibition zone (mm) and interpret using CLSI or EUCAST zone diameter breakpoints.
