Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Nitrocefin Solution is a chromogenic reagent designed for the rapid qualitative detection of β-lactamase production in pathogenic microorganisms. β-lactamase enzymes are responsible for resistance to penicillins and many cephalosporins through hydrolysis of the β-lactam ring. Rapid identification of β-lactamase-producing organisms supports accurate antimicrobial therapy decisions and resistance monitoring.
This product is supplied in a lyophilized format with a dedicated rehydrating fluid to ensure reagent stability and optimal performance.
Principle of the Method
Nitrocefin is a chromogenic cephalosporin substrate.
When β-lactamase is present:
- The enzyme hydrolyzes the β-lactam ring of nitrocefin.
- The substrate undergoes a visible color change from pale yellow to pink/red.
- The color change indicates β-lactamase production.
Organisms that do not produce β-lactamase will not cause a color change within the specified test period.
The chromogenic method provides a sensitive and rapid alternative to iodometric and acidimetric β-lactamase detection techniques.
