Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Schaedler Anaerobe Agar is a selective dehydrated culture medium designed to support the growth and isolation of aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms from intestinal, fecal, food, and environmental samples. The formulation is free from thioglycollate and incorporates cysteine hydrochloride to suppress background organisms, especially Escherichia coli, allowing fastidious and nutritionally demanding bacteria to flourish under anaerobic conditions.
Key Features
- Selective medium for intestinal aerobic and anaerobic flora
- Inhibits non-target Gram-negative bacteria, especially E. coli
- Contains cysteine hydrochloride and glucose as reducing agents
- Thioglycollate-free formulation to avoid inhibition of sensitive anaerobes
- Developed based on formulations by Schaedler, Dubos & Costello and modified for human microbiota
- Ideal for use in clinical, food microbiology, and environmental monitoring laboratories
- Long shelf life: 5 years
- Storage temperature: 10–30°C
- For In Vitro Diagnostic Use
Applications
- Isolation and cultivation of aerobic and anaerobic intestinal microorganisms
- Investigation of human and animal fecal microbiota
- Testing of food and environmental samples for anaerobic bacteria
- Selective cultivation where suppression of Escherichia coli and other Gram-negative bacilli is essential
Composition and Functional Components
- Cysteine hydrochloride – Reducing agent and E. coli inhibitor
- Glucose – Energy source and reducing agent
- Agar base – Nutrient matrix for strict and facultative anaerobes
