Rapid Latex Slide Test for the Identification of Staphylococcus aureus via Clumping Factor and Protein A Detection

The Thermo Scientific™ Staphaurex™ Latex Agglutination Test is a rapid and highly sensitive diagnostic tool for the qualitative identification of Staphylococcus aureus from isolates grown on agar. This test detects coagulase (clumping factor) and protein A, both hallmark features of S. aureus, using white latex particles coated with human fibrinogen and IgG.

When the latex reagent is mixed with a suspension of S. aureus, the interaction of clumping factor with fibrinogen and/or protein A with IgG causes visible agglutination within seconds, providing clinicians with fast and reliable results that aid in infection diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Key Features & Benefits

High Sensitivity and Specificity

  • Detects both clumping factor and protein A with >99% sensitivity and specificity
  • Delivers clear results without the need for control latex
  • Backed by over 50 years of validated clinical use

Rapid & Reliable Results

  • Agglutination visible within seconds
  • Ideal for both selective and non-selective culture media
  • Enhances diagnostic speed in urgent care and routine settings

Streamlined Workflow

  • Includes test latex, reaction cards, and disposable mixing tools
  • No control latex required, reducing testing complexity
  • Color-coded components for easy identification and reduced error
  • Supports productivity with compact kit sizes for flexible lab use

Cost-Effective Diagnostic Solution

  • Available in 120- and 400-test formats
  • Separate component purchasing available for optimized inventory use
  • Comprehensive Staphylococcus identification portfolio from a single provider

Intended Use

A manual, qualitative latex agglutination slide test designed for professional in vitro diagnostic use, the Staphaurex™ test helps distinguish Staphylococcus aureus from coagulase-negative staphylococci by detecting:

  • Clumping factor (bound coagulase)
  • Protein A

The assay supports clinical decision-making in cases of suspected staph-related infections such as skin infections, abscesses, foodborne illness, and toxic shock syndrome.
