Invitrogen™ Trypan Blue Stain (0.4%) is a ready-to-use, colorimetric viability reagent for distinguishing live versus dead cells based on membrane integrity. Used widely in conjunction with the Countess™ family of automated cell counters, this 0.4% solution delivers consistent results for assessing cell viability, health, and culture quality in mammalian, yeast, or bacterial cells.
Live cells exclude trypan blue, while dead cells stain blue, making this an effective tool for viability quantification using manual or automated counting systems. The solution is packaged in convenient 1 mL vials for single-use or batch preparation, reducing contamination risk and preserving reagent stability.
Key Features
- 0.4% concentration—ideal for Countess™ automated counters
- Visual identification of dead cells by colorimetric exclusion
- Compatible with manual hemocytometers and automated readers
- Convenient 2 × 1 mL packaging format
- No refrigeration required—room temperature stable
- Non-fluorescent dye; suitable for brightfield microscopy
- Low-prep workflow for viability screening in cell culture labs

Troubleshooting Notes for Precipitate Formation
Precipitate is common in trypan blue after prolonged storage or freezing. To reduce it:
- Filter through a 0.3 μm sterile membrane.
- Centrifuge gently or allow passive settling (avoid vortexing).
- Warm gently to 37 °C for 10 minutes before use.
Applications
- Live/dead cell viability analysis
- Manual hemocytometer counting
- Use with Countess™ chamber slides and cell counters
- Cell culture health monitoring
- Viability assessment before flow cytometry or expansion
Invitrogen™ Trypan Blue Stain (0.4%) offers a simple, reliable, and well-validated solution for routine viability assessments. Compatible with Countess™ cell counters and standard hemocytometers, this stain enables accurate live/dead discrimination across a variety of cell types—making it an indispensable tool for cell culture labs, research facilities, and bioprocessing environments.
