Invitrogen™ Streptavidin is a high-affinity biotin-binding protein purified from Streptomyces avidinii, designed for use in biotin-based detection, capture, and purification applications. Streptavidin shares strong biotin-binding properties with avidin, but exhibits significantly lower nonspecific binding, making it especially suited for applications requiring enhanced specificity and minimal background.
Each milligram of streptavidin delivers binding activity >11 units, where one unit binds 1 µg of biotin, as originally defined by Green (Biochem. J., 89:599, 1963). The protein is lyophilized from 10 mM PBS (pH 7.4) and can be reconstituted in distilled or deionized water for immediate use.
Key Features and Benefits
- High Biotin Affinity: Strong, non-covalent interaction (Kd ≈ 10⁻¹⁵ M) ideal for sensitive detection assays
- Low Nonspecific Binding: Reduced background interference compared to avidin
- Lyophilized Form: Long shelf-life, easy reconstitution with 1 mL water
- Unconjugated: Ready for use in direct binding, coating, conjugation, or amplification systems
- Reliable Activity: ≥11 units/mg biotin-binding capacity
