Liofilchem® Amies Transport Medium w/ Charcoal is a semi-solid, phosphate-buffered medium designed for the collection, transport, and preservation of microbiological specimens. It maintains the viability of microorganisms without promoting significant growth and is particularly suitable for anaerobic bacteria. The addition of charcoal enhances bacterial survival by acting as a detoxifying agent and reducing oxygen tension.
Key Features
- Enhanced Preservation with Charcoal
- Detoxifies the medium and reduces oxygen tension, improving bacterial survival.
- Phosphate-Buffered, Semi-Solid Medium
- Stabilizes pH during transport and reduces contamination risks.
- Wide Applicability
- Suitable for clinical specimens and a variety of microorganisms, including:
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Neisseria gonorrhoeae
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Streptococcus pyogenes
- Suitable for clinical specimens and a variety of microorganisms, including:
- High Bacterial Viability
- Supports gonococcal survival for up to 12 hours under controlled conditions.

- Cut the stick and screw the cap tightly to submerge the swab.
- Keep the specimen cool during transport.
- Storage During Transport
- Store at 2-8°C during the transport period.
Quality Control Data
Control Strain | Inoculum (CFU) | Incubation Conditions | Reaction |
---|---|---|---|
Haemophilus influenzae ATCC® 49766 | 50-100 | Microaerobic, 18-24 h, 35 ± 2°C | Good growth |
Neisseria gonorrhoeae ATCC® 19424 | 50-100 | Microaerobic, 18-24 h, 35 ± 2°C | Good growth |

Storage and Stability
- Dehydrated Powder: Store at 10-30°C in a dry environment, tightly sealed in its original container.
- Prepared Containers: Store at 2-8°C, protected from light.
- Shelf Life: 4 years for powder; 1 year for prepared medium.
Limitations
- Contaminants may grow during extended transport.
- Specimens should be inoculated promptly onto appropriate media.
- Not suitable for all fastidious organisms.
- Gonococcal survival decreases after 12 hours and may affect recovery if initially present in small numbers.
