The Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Slanetz and Bartley Medium (Dehydrated) is a selective medium specifically formulated for the detection and enumeration of enterococci in water and food samples. Originally devised by Slanetz and Bartley, this medium is highly selective and reliable for enterococci detection using membrane filtration or direct plating methods. It is a critical tool in monitoring food hygiene and water quality.
Key Features
- Selective for Enterococci:
- Contains sodium azide, which inhibits Gram-negative organisms, ensuring specificity for enterococci.
- Easy-to-Interpret Results:
- Enterococci reduce tetrazolium chloride in the medium, forming distinct dark red/maroon colonies for presumptive identification.
- Versatile Usage:
- Suitable for both membrane filtration and direct plating techniques.
- Widely Recommended:
- Recognized in microbiological guidelines by:
- Environment Agency: Microbiology of Drinking Water.
- ISO Standards: Water quality testing for enterococci.
- Nordic Committee on Food Analysis: Food testing.
