The Thermo Scientific™ Escherichia coli O157 Latex Test provides a rapid and reliable method for confirming Escherichia coli serogroup O157 directly from colonies cultured on plated media. By utilizing latex agglutination technology, this test detects the O157 antigen and helps identify potential verotoxin-producing strains (VTEC) associated with severe infections such as haemorrhagic colitis (HC) and haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).
When used in conjunction with Sorbitol MacConkey Agar (Oxoid CM0813), the test offers a fast, convenient workflow: non-sorbitol fermenting colonies (colorless on SMAC) can be rapidly screened to determine if they belong to the O157 serogroup, while sorbitol fermenting isolates (pink colonies) are excluded.
