BG-Sentinel 2 Mosquito Trap – Basic Version

The BG-Sentinel 2 (Basic Version) is Biogents’ most renowned mosquito trap and is widely regarded as the gold standard for monitoring Aedes mosquitoes, particularly vectors of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Originally developed through more than 16 years of academic research into mosquito host-finding behavior, the BG-Sentinel has been extensively validated and is now used globally by research scientists, public health authorities, pest control operators (PCOs), and surveillance programs.

The trap was specifically designed to target Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Aedes polynesiensis, but extensive field use across multiple continents has demonstrated that it also effectively captures other mosquito species and blood-sucking insects, making it a highly versatile surveillance tool.

Principle of Operation

The BG-Sentinel 2 mimics key human host cues that attract mosquitoes:

• Convection currents similar to body heat rising from human skin
• Visual contrasts that simulate a human presence
• Artificial skin emanations released over a large surface area

Mosquitoes are drawn into the trap and captured by a powerful yet low-energy ventilator, ensuring efficient and gentle collection suitable for downstream identification or analysis.

When combined with carbon dioxide (CO₂), the BG-Sentinel 2 becomes an excellent general mosquito surveillance trap for a wide range of species. CO₂ can be supplied via compressed gas or via the BG-CO₂ Generator (yeast-based system) for 24-hour CO₂ production.
