Liofilchem® Chromatic™ ESBL + AmpC Supplement is a selective lyophilized additive designed for use with Chromatic™ ESBL Agar Base (Ref. 610629 / 620629). The complete medium enables the isolation and detection of ESBL and AmpC β-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae directly from clinical specimens.
The selective formulation promotes optimal recovery of resistant Gram-negative isolates while inhibiting carbapenem-susceptible and non-Enterobacteriaceae organisms, facilitating rapid phenotypic differentiation of β-lactamase-mediated resistance mechanisms in accordance with EUCAST and CLSI recommendations.
Key Features

- Each vial sufficient for 500 mL of medium.
- Compliant with EUCAST resistance mechanism detection guidelines.
- Ideal for clinical, hospital, and reference microbiology laboratories.
Composition
| Component | Per Vial | Per Litre of Medium | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selective Mix | 0.5 g | 1.0 g | Inhibits susceptible strains and enhances growth of ESBL/AmpC producers |
Principle of the Method
Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) and AmpC-producing Enterobacteriaceae are among the most clinically significant antibiotic-resistant pathogens.
The Chromatic™ ESBL + AmpC Supplement contains selective components that inhibit susceptible Gram-negative bacteria while permitting the growth of resistant isolates, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, and related species expressing ESBL or AmpC enzymes.
When combined with Chromatic™ ESBL Agar Base, the medium enables color-based differentiation of resistant strains, providing a fast and reliable phenotypic screening tool for infection control and antimicrobial resistance monitoring.
Preparation and Use
- Aseptically reconstitute one vial of Chromatic™ ESBL + AmpC Supplement with 5 mL of sterile distilled water.
- Mix until fully dissolved.
- Add the entire content aseptically to 500 mL of autoclaved Chromatic™ ESBL Agar Base, cooled to 45–50°C.
- Mix gently and pour into sterile Petri dishes.
Quality Control
| Organism | ATCC No. | Resistance Type | Colony Color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klebsiella pneumoniae | 700603 | ESBL positive, AmpC negative | Green-blue |
| Klebsiella pneumoniae | BAA-1144 | ESBL negative, AmpC positive | Green-blue |
| Escherichia coli | 25922 | ESBL/AmpC negative | Inhibited |
