Potassium Tellurite (3.5%) is a sterile liquid reagent used as a selective supplement for the preparation of microbiological media.
Manufactured by Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™, this solution enhances the selectivity and differentiation of media formulations used in the isolation of Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Staphylococcus aureus from clinical and food samples.
Key Features
- Ready-to-use sterile solution (3.5%) for easy and precise media supplementation.
- Enhances the selectivity of specialized culture media for pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria.
- Ensures consistent media performance and reproducibility in diagnostic and research microbiology.
- Supplied as 10 × 2 mL vials for multiple preparations and extended usability.
Applications
- Hoyle’s Medium: For the isolation and differentiation of Corynebacterium diphtheriae from upper respiratory tract specimens.
- Vogel-Johnson Medium: For the isolation and enumeration of Staphylococcus aureus from clinical and food samples.
- Baird-Parker Medium: For the selective detection of Staphylococcus aureus from food and environmental samples.
- Giolitti-Cantoni Medium: For enrichment and isolation of Staphylococcus aureus in food testing.
Principle
Potassium tellurite acts as a selective inhibitor of many non-target bacteria, allowing the growth and differentiation of specific pathogenic organisms such as Corynebacterium diphtheriae and Staphylococcus aureus.
When added to culture media, tellurite reduces to metallic tellurium, forming black or gray colonies that facilitate identification and enumeration.
