Liofilchem® Chromatic™ CRE Supplement is a selective lyophilized additive designed for the preparation of Chromatic™ CRE Agar Base (Ref. 611619 / 621619). The complete medium enables the isolation and differentiation of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) directly from clinical specimens, aiding in the early detection of multidrug-resistant pathogens such as Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC), Escherichia coli (NDM, OXA, VIM), and other carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae.
The selective formulation enhances the recovery of CRE while inhibiting carbapenem-susceptible and non-Enterobacteriaceae species, ensuring high diagnostic accuracy and reproducibility in antimicrobial resistance surveillance and infection control applications.
Key Features
- Highly selective supplement for CRE detection and differentiation.
- For use with Chromatic™ CRE Agar Base (Ref. 611619 / 621619).

- Suppresses non-Enterobacteriaceae and carbapenem-sensitive strains.
- Lyophilized format—ready to reconstitute and incorporate into base medium.
- ISO and EUCAST guideline compliant.
- Each vial sufficient for 500 mL of medium.
- Ideal for clinical microbiology and hospital infection control laboratories.
Composition
| Component | Per Vial | Per Litre of Medium | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selective Mix | 0.1 g | 0.2 g | Promotes CRE growth and inhibits non-target organisms |
Principle of the Method
Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae are among the most critical multidrug-resistant pathogens in clinical settings. The Chromatic™ CRE Supplement contains a specialized selective mix that enhances the recovery of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (KPC, NDM, VIM, OXA-48 types), while suppressing carbapenem-susceptible strains and unrelated flora.
When incorporated into Chromatic™ CRE Agar Base, the supplement allows for the visual differentiation of CRE colonies, typically forming blue-violet colonies on the chromogenic base medium, providing a rapid and reliable screening method consistent with EUCAST and CLSI recommendations.
Preparation and Use
- Reconstitute one vial of Chromatic™ CRE Supplement aseptically with 5 mL of sterile distilled water.
- Mix until completely dissolved.
- Add the entire reconstituted vial aseptically to 500 mL of autoclaved Chromatic™ CRE Agar Base (45–50 °C).
- Mix gently and pour into sterile Petri dishes.
Quality Control
| Test Organism | ATCC No. | Expected Result | Colony Color |
|---|---|---|---|
| Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC positive) | BAA-1705 | Good growth | Blue-violet |
| Escherichia coli (carbapenem-susceptible) | 25922 | Inhibited | — |
Appearance: Lyophilized, whitish button; clear solution after reconstitution.
Incubation: 18–24 hours at 35 ± 2 °C (aerobic).
Storage and Stability
- Store at 2–8 °C in original sealed packaging.
- Protect from humidity and light.
- Stable during transport for up to 4 days at 18–25 °C or 48 hours at 35–39 °C.
