Cefsulodin sodium salt hydrate is a third-generation, semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic used primarily for its selective antimicrobial activity against Yersinia enterocolitica, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and related species. It is most commonly incorporated into CIN agar (Cefsulodin–Irgasan–Novobiocin) as a selective agent, where it suppresses background flora and facilitates the isolation of Yersinia species in clinical, food safety, and environmental microbiology.
This β-lactam antibiotic works by competitively inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)—notably PBP1A, PBP1B, and PBP3—thereby disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis at the final transpeptidation step. Its targeted mechanism of action and narrow spectrum make it an excellent reagent for resistance studies, PBP interaction assays, and microbiological selection.
Applications
-
Selective Agent in Culture Media
Included in CIN agar for isolation of Yersinia enterocolitica by suppressing competing Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. -
Antibiotic Resistance Studies
Applied in laboratory testing to evaluate β-lactam resistance profiles and study the mechanisms of cephalosporin action. -
Cell Wall Biosynthesis Research
Used in studies investigating penicillin-binding proteins and bacterial cell wall construction. -
Microbial Selection in Research
Supports experimental selection of susceptible strains and resistant mutants in molecular biology and microbiology workflows.
Key Features and Benefits
- High purity (≥97% by HPLC) ensures consistent performance and reproducibility.
- Defined β-lactam antibiotic activity ideal for mechanistic and resistance research.
- Supplied as a stable crystalline powder for ease of handling and storage.
- Narrow spectrum ensures minimal off-target effects during microbial selection.
- Manufactured under the Thermo Scientific Chemicals brand, formerly Alfa Aesar.
