It polymerizes to formaldehyde upon heating and alkaline treatment (with sodium hydroxide), making it an ideal reagent for preparing formalin-based fixatives.

Usage Guidelines

  • Preparation of Formaldehyde Solution
    • Dissolve paraformaldehyde powder in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or water
    • Heat to 60°C while stirring
    • Add a small amount of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to adjust pH
    • Once dissolved, filter sterilize if required
  • Fixation Procedure:
    • Use at 4% paraformaldehyde solution in PBS for standard fixation
    • Fix cells/tissues at room temperature or 4°C, depending on application
