Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Tryptone Soya Agar (TSA) is a versatile, nutrient-rich general-purpose medium formulated for the cultivation of a broad spectrum of microorganisms, including aerobic, anaerobic, and facultative bacteria. Also known as Casein Soya Bean Digest Agar, TSA conforms to the standards of major international pharmacopoeias including EP, USP, JP, and BP, making it suitable for pharmaceutical sterility and growth promotion testing, as well as clinical and food microbiology.
This dehydrated medium contains two high-quality peptones derived from pancreatic and enzymatic digestion, providing a rich source of amino acids and nitrogenous compounds. TSA supports robust microbial growth and is commonly used as a reference medium for evaluating selective media, as well as for preparing specialized media such as blood agar, chocolate agar, and enhanced hemolysis agar (EHA).

Preparation Instructions
To prepare 1 L of medium:
- Suspend 40 g of TSA powder in 1 L distilled water.
- Heat to boiling with frequent stirring until fully dissolved.
- Autoclave at 121°C for 15 minutes.
For Blood Agar:
- Cool to 45–50°C and add 7% sterile defibrinated blood. Mix gently.
For Chocolate Agar:
- Heat blood-supplemented TSA until it turns chocolate brown, indicating hemolysis.
