Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ MRS Agar (Dehydrated) is a highly selective and nutritionally optimized medium developed by de Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe for the cultivation of lactic acid bacteria (LAB). It is the solidified version of MRS Broth and is specifically formulated to support the growth of a wide range of LAB, including the slow-growing and fastidious strains of Lactobacillus brevis and Lactobacillus fermenti. The formulation also supports Streptococcus, Pediococcus, and Leuconostoc species. MRS Agar is ideal for isolating and enumerating LAB in food microbiology, clinical diagnostics, and probiotic research.

This dehydrated medium conforms to international industrial microbiology standards such as AFNOR, IDF, and NMKL, making it a reliable choice for quality control and regulatory testing workflows.

Preparation Instructions

  1. Suspend 62 g of MRS Agar powder in 1 liter of distilled water.
  2. Heat to boiling while stirring until fully dissolved.
  3. Sterilize at 121 °C for 15 minutes in an autoclave.
  4. Cool to 45–50 °C before pouring into sterile Petri dishes or tubes.
