Ethidium bromide (EtBr) is a potent fluorescent intercalating agent widely used for the visualization of nucleic acids in agarose gel electrophoresis and other molecular biology applications. Supplied at ≥94% purity (titration), this red-to-dark purple crystalline powder fluoresces strongly under UV light when bound to double-stranded DNA or RNA.
Due to its high affinity for nucleic acids, Ethidium bromide enables sensitive detection of even low quantities of DNA. It is used primarily in post-staining or precast gel loading buffers and remains a standard in molecular diagnostics despite the availability of non-mutagenic alternatives.
Key Features
- ≥94% purity (titration), molecular biology grade
- High-sensitivity DNA stain for agarose and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis
- Strong red fluorescence under UV light upon intercalation with DNA or RNA
- Soluble in water (1% solution yields a clear red solution with pH ~4.5)
- Supplied as a stable, crystalline powder for long shelf life
- Provided with batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet
