Biological Function & Mechanism

FGF-2 binds to high-affinity Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptors (FGFRs) on the cell surface, triggering receptor dimerization and activation of intracellular signaling cascades.

Major downstream pathways include:

  • MAPK/ERK signaling pathway
  • PI3K–AKT pathway
  • Cell survival and proliferation signaling
  • Angiogenesis and tissue regeneration pathways

FGF2 exists in multiple isoforms with distinct intracellular localization. The 18 kDa cytosolic isoform primarily mediates paracrine and autocrine effects, while higher molecular weight isoforms can localize to the nucleus and exert intracrine functions.
