For Isolation and Differentiation of Streptococcus spp. in Veterinary and Environmental Samples
CHROMagar™ Streptococcus is a selective chromogenic culture medium specifically designed for the detection and differentiation of Streptococcus species, especially those involved in bovine mastitis and other veterinary or environmental infections. The medium offers clear color-based colony differentiation, allowing the identification of major pathogens such as Streptococcus agalactiae, S. uberis, and Enterococcus spp. within 24 hours.
This medium is particularly useful in complex microbial environments, such as milk from mastitis cases or fecal samples, where rapid differentiation is critical for diagnostics and control measures.
Colony Appearance
Organism | Colony Appearance |
---|---|
Streptococcus agalactiae | Blue |
Streptococcus uberis | Blue to metallic blue |
Enterococcus spp. | Mauve to purple |
Performance
Environmental and contagious Streptococcus species are common mastitis pathogens, frequently causing:
- Elevated somatic cell counts (SCC)
- Chronic udder infections
- Milk contamination in dairy herds
CHROMagar™ Streptococcus allows fast and reliable identification of key species involved in udder infections, enabling on-farm or laboratory-based diagnosis and targeted treatment decisions. It is also useful for differentiating streptococci in samples with complex flora, such as environmental or animal forensic samples.
Intended Use
CHROMagar™ Streptococcus is intended for:
-
Isolation and differentiation of Streptococcus species from:
- Bovine milk (mastitis diagnosis)
- Environmental swabs
- Veterinary clinical samples
-
Use in:
- Veterinary microbiology
- Milk quality control programs
- Dairy herd health surveillance
- Field diagnostics and research labs
This medium is not intended for human clinical diagnostic use or to guide therapy without confirmatory testing.
Advantages
-
High Selectivity
Selectively supports the growth of streptococci while suppressing competing flora. -
Color Differentiation
Enables clear species identification by distinct colony coloration. -
Fast Results
Colonies can be interpreted after 24 hours of incubation at 35–37 °C. -
Easy Interpretation in Mixed Samples
Performs well in specimens with heavy microbial loads, such as raw milk or farm environmental swabs. -
Direct Colony Testing
Colonies can be used directly for confirmatory testing (e.g., biochemical assays, MALDI-TOF, PCR).
Use with Multi-Sector Plates
CHROMagar™ Streptococcus is available in 3-sector combination plates featuring:
- CHROMagar™ Staphylococcus
- CHROMagar™ Streptococcus
- CHROMagar™ Mastitis GN
These multi-sector plates offer broad-spectrum detection of pathogens relevant to mastitis and veterinary diagnostics, especially in milk samples and animal forensic investigations.
Test Procedure
- Inoculate sample (milk, swab, etc.) directly onto CHROMagar™ Streptococcus.
- Incubate aerobically at 35–37 °C for 18–24 hours.
-
Observe colony colors for preliminary identification:
- Blue: S. agalactiae
- Metallic blue: S. uberis
- Purple: Enterococcus spp.

CHROMagar™ Streptococcus is a robust, highly selective chromogenic medium for the rapid identification of key Streptococcus species, particularly in the context of veterinary diagnostics and mastitis control. Its clear colony differentiation, fast turnaround, and compatibility with multi-sector formats make it an essential tool for dairy microbiology, animal health labs, and environmental testing programs.
