The Thermo Scientific™ Oxoid™ Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar (Dehydrated) is a selective medium formulated for the detection and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae in food products. This glucose-containing medium enhances reproducibility in identifying typical colonies, making it a trusted tool for microbiological food safety testing. Its formulation is optimized for detecting glucose-fermenting Enterobacteriaceae, including coliforms, salmonellae, shigellae, and heat-resistant species such as Klebsiella and Citrobacter.

    Key Features

    1. Selective for Enterobacteriaceae:
      • Combines neutral red, crystal violet, and bile salts to inhibit Gram-positive bacteria and promote Enterobacteriaceae growth.
    2. Glucose Addition for Enhanced Detection:
      • Glucose fermentation produces acid and/or gas, improving the identification of Enterobacteriaceae compared to lactose-only media.
    3. Easy-to-Interpret Results:
      • Glucose fermentation lowers the pH, forming purple-pink colonies due to the neutral red indicator.
    4. ISO-Compliant:
      • Developed to meet the recommendations of ISO standards, ensuring reproducibility and accurate counts for food safety.

    Applications

    1. Food Microbiology:
      • Detect and enumerate Enterobacteriaceae in raw, processed, and heat-treated food products.
    2. Process Validation:
      • Monitors heat-resistant species like Klebsiella and Citrobacter to identify processing failures.
    3. Environmental Monitoring:
      • Tests for Enterobacteriaceae presence in food production facilities and handling environments.
    4. Research:
      • Studies glucose fermentation and acid/gas production in Enterobacteriaceae.

    Preparation Instructions

    1. Suspend 41.5g of Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar powder in 1 liter of distilled water.
    2. Heat gently to dissolve completely.
    3. Bring to a boil while stirring to prevent localized overheating.
    4. Do not autoclave. Cool to 45-50°C, pour into sterile Petri dishes, and allow to solidify.

    Advantages

    • Enhanced Detection: Glucose addition improves detection of lactose non-fermenting Enterobacteriaceae.
    • Highly Selective: Crystal violet and bile salts inhibit Gram-positive bacteria, ensuring specificity.
    • Accurate and Reliable: ISO-compliant formulation provides consistent and reproducible results.
    • Broad Application: Suitable for food safety, process validation, and environmental monitoring.

    Packaging

    • Quantity: 500g of dehydrated powder.
    • Yield: Prepares 13.0L of medium.

Why Choose Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar?

    • A proven medium for food safety microbiology that adheres to international standards.
    • Reliable detection of Enterobacteriaceae, including lactose non-fermenters.
    • Backed by Thermo Scientific’s commitment to quality and innovation.
