Ribosome-Targeting Antibiotic for Selection of Genetically Engineered Cells
Gibco™ Geneticin™ Selective Antibiotic (G418 Sulfate) is a broad-spectrum aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by Micromonospora rhodorangea. It functions by binding to the 80S and 70S ribosomes in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, respectively, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. Widely used in molecular biology and cell culture, G418 is a reliable agent for selecting and maintaining genetically modified cells that express resistance genes such as APH (3')-I or APH (3')-II.
This product is supplied in powder form and is designed for preparation of aqueous stock solutions for use in bacterial and mammalian cell culture systems.
Key Features and Benefits
-
High-Purity Selection Agent
Inhibits protein synthesis in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells by targeting ribosomes. -
Effective Selection Tool
Enables stable cell line generation by eliminating non-transfected cells in cultures expressing neomycin resistance genes. -
Flexible Concentration Range
- 100–200 μg/mL for bacteria
- 200–500 μg/mL for most mammalian cells
-
Dual-Site cGMP Manufacturing
Manufactured in Grand Island, NY and Scotland, UK under ISO 13485 and FDA-registered facilities for supply chain continuity and regulatory compliance.
Applications
- Stable transfection selection in mammalian cells expressing neomycin resistance
- Selection of genetically engineered bacteria
- Long-term maintenance of transgenic or recombinant cell lines
- Cell line development for protein expression or functional studies
